Are We Wise About the Wisdom of Crowds? The Use of Group Judgments in Belief Revision
نویسنده
چکیده
R research has advanced our understanding of how people use the advice of others to update their beliefs. Because groups and teams play a significant role in organizations and collectively are wiser than their individual members, it is important to understand their influence on belief revision as well. I report the results of four studies examining intuitions about group wisdom and the informational influence of groups. In their overt assessments, experimental participants rated larger groups as more accurate than smaller groups and discriminated more between them when group size was salient. When provided advice, participants relied more on groups than individuals to update their beliefs, but were only modestly sensitive to group size. Most were suboptimal in the use of that advice, overweighting their initial beliefs and underweighting the more valid judgment of the group. Thus although acknowledged in principle, the wisdom of crowds is only shallowly manifest in observed behavior.

When is a crowd wise?
Numerous studies have established that aggregating judgments or predictions across individuals can be surprisingly accurate in a variety of domains, including prediction markets, political polls, game shows, and forecasting (see Surowiecki, 2004). Under Galton’s (1907) conditions of individuals having largely unbiased and independent judgments, the aggregated judgment of a group of individuals ...
متن کاملGroup Wisdom Support Systems: Aggregating the Insights of Many through Information Technology
Evidence from a variety of domains suggests that the “wisdom of crowds”, the aggregated insights and judgments of large groups of non-experts, can generate results that are equal or better to those of experts. Traditionally, aggregating the insights of many has been a tedious and often infeasible task. Even the group decision support systems of a few years ago were not ready for this challenge....

متن کاملIntuitive Biases in Choice versus Estimation: Implications for the Wisdom of Crowds
Although researchers have documented many instances of crowd wisdom, it is important to know whether some kinds of judgments may lead the crowd astray, whether crowds’ judgments improve with feedback over time, and whether crowds’ judgments can be improved by changing the way judgments are elicited. We investigated these questions in a sports gambling context (predictions against point spreads)...
متن کاملExpertise and the Wisdom of Crowds: Whose Judgments to Trust and When
The Wisdom of Crowds describes the fact that aggregating a group’s estimate regarding unknown values is often a better strategy than selecting even an expert’s opinion. The efficacy of this strategy, however, depends on biases being nonsystematic and everyone being able to make a meaningful assessment. In situations where these conditions do not hold, expertise seems more likely to produce the ...
